Currently based in New Mexico, Athena Huckaby holds a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Management with a concentration in Maternal, Child, Sexual, and Reproductive Health from the City University of New York School of Public Health.
Athena’s involvement with harm reduction began in 2004, first in the arena of sexual and reproductive health, and then moved into mental health and substance use disorders in 2012. Athena has a particular interest in working with people who use drugs, LGBTQAI individuals, youth, and sex workers. Her professional areas of interest are not incidental to her lived experience.

Policy Development
& Analysis
Explore our expertise in health policy analysis and development, with a particular emphasis on addressing the pressing issues of overdose deaths and advancing medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). By focusing on the development and enhancement of policies related to harm reduction and MOUD, we strive to create a more supportive and effective healthcare landscape.
Provider Education
We provide customized education and training for physicians, nurses, healthcare teams, and public health professionals on topics including substance use disorder, medications for opioid use disorder, harm reduction, overdose prevention, chronic pain management, stigma, and related public health issues. Trainings are grounded in current research and best practices and can be tailored to the needs of your organization, with continuing education opportunities available for eligible programs.

Housing fund
Administered by the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, the Grajeda-Huckaby Low Barrier Housing Fund plays a pivotal role in addressing the housing needs of individuals with substance use disorders. This dedicated fund, named in honor of the founders, seeks to break down barriers to stable housing. We offer vital support to those facing or experiencing homelessness due to substance use challenges.
