History
Matt Curtis was the first person I remember saying the words “Harm Reduction” to me. At the time, I was confused why the approach would even need a name — it just seemed like common sense. That was at the City University of New York School of Public Health, then at Hunter College, in 2012.
Prior to that, I had been working as a Medical Administrator in reproductive and sexual health as well as in mental health and drug treatment. I also worked briefly with the Persist Health Project as well as the Red Umbrella Project, both peer-led sex worker organizations advocating for sex workers’ rights.
I obtained my bachelor’s degree through the City University of New York (CUNY) Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies, which allowed me to put together my previous college credits as well as my life experience into a self-designed degree program. Mine was Gender and the Politics of Healthcare, which combined Gender and Sexuality Studies, Biology, Business, and Public Health. I then earned my Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Policy and Management through the CUNY School of Public Health. My concentration was Maternal, Child, Sexual, and Reproductive Health. My personal joke is that I thought my career would involve focusing on sex, and instead, it has involved focusing on drugs.
